Andover is a town in Hampshire, England, located on the River Anton. It is 18.5 miles west of Basingstoke, 18.5 miles northwest of Winchester, and 25 miles north of Southampton. The town is 58 miles southwest of Heathrow Airport and can be accessed via the M25 and M3.

Population and Development

As of the 2021 census, Andover has a population of 50,887. It is identified as one of four Major Development Areas in Hampshire for large housing growth. Plans are in place to build 2,500 homes to the northeast of the town. Andover is an unparished area in Test Valley with a drive for re-establishing a town council.

Early History

Andover's history dates back to 950 when King Edred built a royal hunting lodge there. By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Andover had about 500 residents and six watermills for grinding grain.

18th and 19th Century

In the 18th century, Andover was a major stop on the stagecoach routes between Exeter, Salisbury, and London, with over 30 stagecoaches passing through daily. The Andover Junction railway station opened in 1854, linking the town to Basingstoke and London.

During the 19th century, Andover developed various amenities, including a theatre, gas street lighting, a fire station, a cottage hospital, a swimming pool, and a recreation ground. A water company was formed in 1875 to provide piped water, and a public library opened in 1897.

Modern History

The Ministry of Defence is the town's largest employer. RAF Andover was a significant site during both World Wars and became the headquarters of the Quartermaster General responsible for Army logistics. In 2001, the Defence Logistics Organisation was formed, and Andover became one of its major sites. Major industries include Twinings, Simplyhealth, Scottish Widows, and The Stannah Group.

Andover has a vibrant cultural scene with venues like The Lights, a live entertainment centre, and the Andover Museum and Museum of the Iron Age. The Chantry Centre is the main shopping area in the town centre.
